Six Pence Pub
The Six Pence Pub building dates to the 1910s, built on an antebellum foundation
with two basements. It is unusual to have a subterranean basement in the Historic
District; most of the buildings in the district have elevated basements.
There are a number of specters haunting this building and over the years there have
been numerous occurrences involving the paranormal. One of the past owners
related that she came in one night, went through the kitchen and down the stairs
to her office in the basement. When she approached the door she got a strange
feeling and a cold chill ran right through her. She opened the door and her
executive desk chair turned toward her and leaned forward then stapped back, as
if someone had stood to get out of the chair. She felt a blast of cold air
pass her as she stood in the doorway. She ran up the stairs, out of the building
and didn't return for two days.
A long time manager said that one night, late, the bartender wanted to leave early
and he was to give a waitress a ride home. She told them to go ahead and she
would clean up the dining room and bar. She then went downstairs and checked
the thermostats on the walk-in coolers, turned off the lights and returned upstairs.
She set the air conditioner on 72 degrees, set the alarm by the front door, locked
the door and went home. That was about 2:30 in the morning. The next
morning
she got a call from the day manager, frantic, asking what happened the night before
and asking her to come to the pub right away. She raced to the pub and found
the staff standing out front. The windows were completely frosted over.
The alarm had been set when they unlocked the door, but it was cold as a freezer.
They went in and found the thermostat set on 60 degrees. They went downstairs
and found every cooler thermostat set at 80 degrees. And, every bulb downstairs
had been removed from the ceiling fixtures and neatly stacked on the floor.
A few years ago, a bartender related this story. The staff had finished cleaning
the dining room and were sitting at the bar having their first drink of the evening.
There was a distant sound of a gumball machine as the handle turns, the balls fall
and hits the little door. The gumball machine was located just to the left
of the front door as you exit the bar. No one was by the door; it was
locked and there was no one else in the place. The waitress and busboy waited
as the bartender set the alarm and exited the pub. He locked the deadbolt
and lifted the mail slot to drop the cooler keys through for the next day's help.
As he lifted the mail slot, a gumball rolled out.
The kitchen staff said the dishes and pots and pans sometimes seem to come alive.
Many times the saucers or plates will stand on end and spin on their own.
A cook once claimed that a saucer in the middle of a stack just dislodged itself
from the rest and sailed across the room.
Visit Six Pence Pub and see if you get more than just good food and drink. |
