Savannah Ghost Post
The Revolutionary War

The Battle of Savannah, the second bloodiest battle of the Revolutionary War, was fought in the Historic District.  Eight o'clock in the morning of October 9th, 1779, eleven hundred fifty men were killed in 55 minutes.  That happened south and west of downtown at Springhill Redoubt (now the Savannah Visitors Center and Roundhouse Railroad Museum).

The British casualties totaled only 150 men and they had leisure to bury their dead and move them to Beaufort, SC to what became the National Cemetery.  They are in a corner of that cemetery still.

The allies did not have that same leisure.  They were given twenty-four hours to get out of town and under a flag of truce they left behind Haitian regiments to bury their dead.  Underneath the Visitors Center is a mass grave of patriots who died for our Liberty.
