Olde Pink House
The old Habersham home, now known as the Olde Pink House Restaurant and Tavern,
is furnished with antique paintings, crystal chandelier and the ghost of Mr. Habersham,
a very entertaining spirit.
The Habersham house is situated on land granted by the Crown. It opened in
1771 and was noted for its beauty and symmetry. Some of the secret meetings
held there helped to secure the independence of the colonies.
The exterior walls were plastered over soft native brick and by 1811 the pink bled
through thus becoming known as the Pink House. Pink House became the location
of the first bank in the State of Georgia, Planters Bank. The cast-iron vaults
are still there today, now used as wine cellars.
When the Habersham house was eventually restored to its former elegance, the ghost
of James Habersham Jr. came home. It seems the ghost is only active between fall
and spring when Mr. Habersham lived in the house. He did not stay there during
the hot summer months. Candles go out for no reason; other candles flame up
by themselves. One of the restaurant cooks claims to have 'seen' Mr. Habersham
on numerous occasions, just standing in the kitchen watching her cook. Occasionally
someone will 'feel' Mr. Habersham's hand on their shoulder. When asked if
any of the restaurant personnel would stay in the house at night....alone.
The reply was a resounding NEVER!
Stop at the Olde Pink House Restaurant and Tavern, located at 23 Abercorn on Reynolds
Square. Enjoy the delicious cuisine and perhaps meet Mr. Habersham's ghost.
