Savannah Ghost Post
17 Hundred 90
17 Hundred 90

17 Hundred 90 is the oldest operating inn in Savannah.  It has both fine dining and guest rooms, and also claims to have a very friendly ghost.  Technically their resident ghost is a poltergeist as she is a noisy spirit.

This building was burned to the brick foundations twice in the great fires but salvageable beams were saved and sitting in the dining room you can notice some of them are charred and burnt.  When the current owners purchased this historic building, it was basically no more than a burned out shell and only had one large room.  While working on Sundays to restore the property, unexplainable things began to happen.

The ghost is apparently Anna Powell who jumped from the top of the house and killed herself.  She died in room 204 and evidently her ghost never left.  You can stay in room 204 any night, but when you make your reservation or check-in, management will tell you it is haunted....they don't want you to ask for your money back if/when you encounter the resident ghost.

I've heard two versions of the Anna Powell story.  One claims she was in love with a German sailor who never returned, thus she killed herself.  The other claims that Steele White (who built the original house in the 1790's) was a successful importer-exporter and very wealthy.  In his early sixties he imported a child bride from Ireland and put her in room 204 until the wedding.  The wedding never took place as a few days later Anna threw herself from the roof, broke her neck and died in room 204.

Regardless of which version is correct, visitors of 17 Hundred 90 claim to see and hear a young woman sitting and weeping on the stoop or on the stairs and when they approach she disappears.  In room 204 guests claim loud banging noises, feeling the bed rise off the floor then crash down, the lights going on and off at all hours day and night, and the shower and toilets operating when no one is there.  The telephone rings and when picked up guests hear a woman sobbing on the other end of the line.  When they unplug the phone it still rings.  Anna also seems to steal lady’s lingerie.

Stop at 17 Hundred 90 (at 225 E. President Street) for a fine dinner, or for a stay in room 204 and perhaps receive a visit from the resident ghost.
